What is the Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP)?
The Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP) is a federal program established by Congress in 1983 to help meet the immediate needs of individuals and families experiencing, or at risk of experiencing, hunger and homelessness. EFSP provides funding to local non-profit and governmental social service organizations that deliver emergency food, shelter, rental and mortgage assistance, utility assistance, and other supportive services.
The program's objectives are to:
- Allocate funding where it is needed most.
- Ensure a fast and effective local response.
- Foster public and private sector collaboration.
- Support local decision-making.
- Maintain accountable and transparent reporting.
United Way Emerald Coast's Role
United Way Emerald Coast proudly serves as the Local Board Administrator for EFSP in Okaloosa and Walton counties. In this role, we coordinate the local application and review process, support the Local Board, and oversee the fair and transparent allocation of federal funds to eligible non-profit organizations serving our community.
By working with local leaders and partner agencies, we help ensure EFSP resources reach organizations providing critical assistance to individuals and families when they need it most.
